Why does natural gut hold tension better than polyester?
Natural gut is more elastic and less dynamically stiff; laboratory tests also place it among the lowest rates of tension loss. Polyester is stiffer and, in the same testing, lost tension rapidly. These are category tendencies—not a guarantee for every string or full racquet.

Evidence: Cross, Lindsey, and Andruczyk tested 90 strings and reported natural gut among the lowest rates of tension loss while polyester strings lost tension rapidly. Their results also grouped natural gut below polyester in dynamic stiffness. The ITF string guide likewise identifies natural gut as the most elastic of the common materials and notes that every string loses tension over time.
What changes in a gut/poly hybrid?
A gut/poly hybrid is a mixed stringbed. Main and cross orientation, pull tensions, racquet geometry, string wear, and playing conditions all affect the measured result.
Track the complete racquet; do not average two category claims. If you reverse the mains and crosses, change a gauge, or alter the split tension, treat it as a new setup and establish a new fresh baseline.
